Baby blues visit

A visit at home during the baby blues, in the first two weeks after giving birth.

The first days with your baby can take you by surprise. You’re tired, your body is still recovering and you’re trying to find your feet at home. You cry more easily than usual. Sometimes you know exactly why, and sometimes you have no idea.

Then there are the thoughts you might prefer to keep to yourself. That you miss your old life. That you’d love a moment on your own. That you wonder whether you can do this. You can be so happy with your baby and still find it hard.

During a baby blues visit, I spend two hours with you at home. I make tea, listen and help you work out what might feel good right now. We can talk, try a short meditation, or I can wash your hair.

About the baby blues

So much changes at once after giving birth. Hormonal changes, lack of sleep, physical recovery and your new daily life can all affect how you feel. During the baby blues, you may feel more emotional, unsure of yourself or overwhelmed.

This can happen even if you already have children. You know motherhood, but you’re finding your way again as your family changes.

What I can do for you during the visit

We don’t need to plan those two hours in advance. When I arrive, we’ll talk about what you feel like doing.

A chat over a cup of tea

How are you doing? How have the last few nights been? And what keeps going through your mind? I listen to whatever you want to share. Including the things you might not say when people come to meet your baby.

Meditation or a breathing exercise

If you’d like, we can try a short meditation or a gentle breathing exercise. I’ll guide you, so you don’t need any experience or preparation. We’ll find what feels comfortable and stop whenever you want.

Washing your hair

It can feel so lovely to have someone wash and gently comb your hair while you don’t have to do anything. Especially when the past few days have mostly been about feeding, changing nappies and trying to sleep.

If you’d enjoy this, we’ll work out how to make it comfortable in your home. Having your hair washed or cared for is an option during the visit.

Your baby and your partner

Your baby can stay with you. If you need to feed or change a nappy, we’ll take the time for that. And please don’t tidy up especially for me.

Your partner can join us if you’d like. Sometimes it helps to talk together about what you need, especially when you’re finding it hard to explain.

Time and price

I spend two hours with you at home. If you’d like to see me again in the second week, you can book a second visit.

First baby blues visit

€95

2 hours at home
Within the first two weeks after birth

Optional second visit

€75

2 hours at home
During the second week after birth

The two visits together cost €170. The €75 price for the second visit applies after a first baby blues visit at €95.

You don’t need to book both visits straight away. We can also talk about it after the first visit and arrange another time.

My usual travel charges for home visits apply. I’ll discuss these with you beforehand.

If you’ve booked doula support with me

Then we already know each other. You don’t need to tell your story from the beginning, and you can keep talking with someone who was there during your pregnancy and birth.

The postpartum visit included in your doula package stays scheduled for a few weeks after the birth. That’s when we look back on your birth together and talk about how you and your family are doing. The baby blues visit is an extra visit in those early days.

Your questions

When can I arrange a visit?

We arrange the first visit within the first two weeks after the birth, usually in the first week. A second visit takes place during the second week.

You can talk to me about this while you’re still pregnant. Once your baby is born, we’ll arrange a time. You can also send me a message after giving birth if you realise you’d like a visit.

What if I don’t know what I need?

You don’t need to know yet. You can simply say that you’d like me to come. When I’m there, we’ll see whether you mostly want to talk, need a little calm or would enjoy having your hair cared for.

Do I have to talk a lot?

No. If you don’t feel like talking much, that’s fine too. You don’t have to tell me your birth story or explain why you’re crying.

How is this different from postpartum doula support?

This visit focuses on how you’re feeling during the baby blues. I listen, take time for you and offer simple care, such as washing your hair.

More extensive postpartum support may also include help around the home, meals and other care. Those aren’t part of this visit.

What if it’s more than the baby blues?

The baby blues usually ease within two weeks. Are you feeling very low or anxious, are things getting worse, or are you struggling to get through the day? Contact your midwife or GP. You don’t need to wait until those two weeks are over.

If these feelings continue beyond two weeks, talk to your midwife or GP about them too.

I can listen and support you, but a baby blues visit doesn’t replace medical or psychological care. If asking for help feels difficult, we can think together about how to take that step.
